The 30 Best Online Ammo Sites for 2026, Ranked
Every major online ammunition retailer evaluated on price, shipping speed, customer service, and real-world reputation. No fluff. No pay-to-play rankings. Just honest assessments from actual shooters.
Real Pricing Data · No Paid Rankings
Most "best ammo sites" lists are paid advertisements disguised as reviews. The retailer pays for placement, the writer puts them at number one, and you end up overpaying for ammo from a site with a history of slow shipping and ignored customer complaints. This is not that list.
We ranked these 30 online ammunition retailers using verifiable data: BBB ratings, Trustpilot scores, community forum reputation across multiple shooting platforms, actual shipping speed reports, and real price comparisons across standardized caliber baskets tracked over 180 days. Where a retailer has known problems, we say so. Where they excel, we explain why.
The online ammo market in 2026 is more competitive than ever, which is good news for buyers. Prices on common calibers have stabilized well below the 2020-2022 shortage peaks. But the legal landscape continues to shift, with six states now requiring background checks or FFL transfers for ammunition purchases and a new federal bill (H.R. 7166) attempting to ban direct-to-consumer ammo shipping entirely. If you value the ability to buy hunting loads online and have them delivered to your door, it matters where you shop and who you support.
MethodologyHow We Ranked These Retailers
Every retailer was evaluated across five weighted categories:
Pricing (30%): We tracked a standardized basket of 10 popular calibers (9mm FMJ, .223/5.56 FMJ, .22 LR, .45 ACP, .308 Win, 12ga #4 steel, 12ga 00 buck, .300 BLK, 6.5 Creedmoor match, and .380 ACP) across all 30 retailers over 180 days. We measured average cost per round including shipping and any membership fees amortized over typical annual purchase volumes.
Shipping Speed and Reliability (25%): Based on verified delivery time reports from community forums, Trustpilot, and BBB complaints. We weighted actual performance over advertised claims.
Customer Service and Trust (20%): BBB rating, Trustpilot score, complaint resolution history, and community reputation across r/guns, ar15.com, snipershide, and other major shooting forums.
Selection and Availability (15%): Breadth of inventory, accuracy of stock reporting, and availability during high-demand periods.
Shipping Coverage (10%): Number of states served and ability to navigate complex state regulations for restricted-state customers.
Know Your StateState-by-State Shipping Restrictions: Know Before You Order
This is where the original version of this article got it badly wrong. We stated California had "recently improved access." That was incorrect. California remains one of the most restrictive states in the country for ammunition purchases. Here are the actual restrictions as of March 2026:
Critical: Restricted States
Six states require background checks, permits, or FFL transfers for ammunition purchases: California, New York, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. If you live in one of these states, you cannot simply order ammo online and have it shipped to your door like you would in Texas or Florida.
The Six Restricted States
Additional Restrictions: Washington, D.C. prohibits all online ammo sales. Alaska and Hawaii face logistical limitations (no air shipping, ground/sea only, significantly higher costs). Maryland prohibits online ammo sales to Annapolis residents specifically. All ammunition must ship ground via UPS or FedEx; USPS prohibits ammunition shipping entirely.
Everywhere Else: The remaining 44 states allow direct-to-home ammunition shipping with no state-level permit requirements beyond federal age minimums (21 for handgun ammo, 18 for rifle/shotgun ammo).
The Numbers2026 Price Benchmarks: What You Should Actually Be Paying
These benchmarks represent "good deal" pricing for brass-cased FMJ range ammunition in March 2026. If you're consistently paying above these numbers, you're leaving money on the table. If you see prices below the "excellent" column, buy in quantity.
| Caliber | Good | Excellent |
|---|---|---|
| 9mm Luger (FMJ) | $0.24/rd | $0.20/rd |
| 5.56 NATO / .223 (FMJ) | $0.38/rd | $0.32/rd |
| .22 LR (Standard) | $0.06/rd | $0.04/rd |
| .45 ACP (FMJ) | $0.38/rd | $0.32/rd |
| .308 Win (FMJ) | $0.65/rd | $0.55/rd |
| 12ga Steel #4 (Waterfowl) | $0.80/rd | $0.60/rd |
Seasonal Timing: Prices are lowest January through March (post-hunting season demand drop). They climb through summer and peak October through December during hunting season and holiday buying. The best time to stock up on waterfowl loads is February, not September.
The Hidden Tax: Shipping typically adds $0.01-0.03 per round on a $200 order. A retailer advertising $0.22/rd on 9mm with $25 shipping on 500 rounds is actually charging $0.27/rd. Always calculate total delivered cost per round before comparing.

AmmoForSale.com
A clearer way to compare ammunition, inventory and price per round.
Buying ammunition online usually comes down to two questions: Is the load you want actually available, and what are you getting for the price? AmmoForSale.com does a good job of making those answers easier to find. Its product pages show ready-to-ship inventory, available quantities and cost per round, along with the specifications shooters actually need before placing an order.
The selection covers handgun, rifle, rimfire and shotgun ammunition from established manufacturers such as Federal, Winchester, Hornady, Speer and others. You can pick up a few boxes when you're trying a new defensive or hunting load, or buy by the case when you already know what runs well through your gun and want to compare larger-quantity pricing.
One of AmmoForSale.com's most useful features is the amount of information provided with individual listings. Product pages can include bullet weight, projectile type, casing material, intended use, muzzle velocity, muzzle energy, primer type and whether the projectile is magnetic. That level of detail matters when you're comparing loads that may look nearly identical in a search result but are built for very different purposes.
The site also offers firearm-specific ammunition recommendations and educational guides for shooters who want more than a product grid and a checkout button. That's particularly useful when you're trying to narrow down range, hunting or defensive loads for a specific firearm.
As always, compare the complete delivered price before ordering and confirm the ammunition laws and shipping requirements where you live. But for shooters who value clear inventory information, detailed listings and the ability to shop anything from individual boxes to bulk quantities, AmmoForSale.com is worth a look.

The RankingsThe Top 10 Online Ammo Retailers for 2026
These are the retailers that consistently perform across pricing, shipping, service, and trust. Rankings are defensible and based on the methodology above.
Lucky Gunner
luckygunner.com · Nashville, TN · Founded 2009

Why #1: Lucky Gunner earns the top spot for doing the one thing most online ammo retailers fail at: if it's on the website, it's in the warehouse and it ships today. Their real-time inventory system is the gold standard in the industry. No backorders. No "estimated ship date." No emails two days later saying your order was canceled because the item was actually out of stock. That reliability alone puts them ahead of retailers with marginally lower prices.
Beyond logistics, Lucky Gunner publishes the most comprehensive ballistic testing data in the industry. They've fired thousands of rounds through calibrated gelatin, measuring velocity, expansion, and penetration, then published the results for free. If you're choosing self-defense ammo, their test data is more useful than anything a manufacturer will tell you. BBB accredited with strong ratings. Pricing is mid-range, but their total delivered cost (including accurate, reasonable shipping) often beats retailers who advertise lower per-round pricing then charge $25-35 for shipping.
Strengths
- Real-time inventory: if it shows in stock, it ships. Period. Zero backorder games.
- Same-day shipping on orders placed by 3 PM EST
- Free ballistic testing database with gelatin data, high-speed photography, and penetration measurements
- Price-per-round clearly displayed on every listing, including shipping estimates
- Email/text alerts when preferred ammo drops in price or comes back in stock
Watch For
Pricing is competitive but rarely the absolute lowest. You're paying a slight premium for guaranteed availability and fast shipping. No membership discount program.
SGAmmo
sgammo.com · Stillwater, OK · Family-Owned

Why #2: SGAmmo is the site serious shooters check first when buying by the case. This family-owned Oklahoma operation has built one of the most loyal followings in the industry by doing one thing exceptionally well: offering the lowest cost per round on bulk ammunition with fast, reliable shipping. The website looks like it was built in 2005. It doesn't matter. The prices and service are what bring people back.
SGAmmo consistently ranks at or near the lowest price on bulk cases of 9mm, 5.56, 7.62x39, and surplus ammunition. They carry a deep inventory of import, surplus, and steel-case ammo that's difficult to find elsewhere. A+ BBB rating. Flat-rate shipping ($12-18 per case of 1,000) keeps total costs honest. Free shipping on orders over $200.
Strengths
- Frequently the absolute lowest CPR on bulk cases of common calibers
- Deep inventory on surplus, import, and steel-case ammunition most retailers don't carry
- Fast shipping with well-protected packaging that survives transit
- Flat-rate shipping keeps total costs transparent and predictable
- A+ BBB rating with strong community reputation
Watch For
Limited payment options (doesn't always accept all credit cards). No membership or loyalty program. Website is functional but dated. Does not ship to California.
Palmetto State Armory
palmettostatearmory.com · Columbia, SC · Founded 2008

Why #3: PSA's daily deals program is legendary for a reason. When they run a deal on ammo, it's frequently the lowest price you'll find anywhere online. Their operating philosophy is volume over margin, and it shows. PSA-branded ammunition offers exceptional value while maintaining solid quality standards. Free shipping promotions are common on orders over $49-99.
The trade-off is shipping speed. PSA is consistently cited on forums for slower-than-expected order processing, sometimes 5-10 business days before your order even ships. They're upfront about delays when they happen, which is more than some retailers can say. Customer service response times can also lag during high-volume periods.
Strengths
- Daily deal pricing regularly 15-25% below market on popular calibers
- PSA-branded ammunition is a reliable budget option
- Frequent free shipping thresholds ($49-99 depending on promotion)
- One-stop shop: firearms, ammo, parts, accessories in one cart
Watch For
Shipping can be slow (5-10+ business days to process). Daily deal prices sell out within hours. Sign up for the email newsletter and act fast. Customer service response can lag during peak periods.
Target Sports USA
targetsportsusa.com · Middletown, CT · Founded 2010

Why #4: If you shoot regularly and buy ammo throughout the year, TSUSA's AMMO+ membership ($95-99.99/year) is one of the best deals in the industry. The 8% discount plus free shipping on every order, no matter the size, means you can order a single box of self-defense ammo to test and not pay $15 shipping. For shooters who buy frequently in varying quantities, the math works out to significant annual savings.
TSUSA boasts a 4.9/5.0 star rating across 233,000+ reviews, which is exceptional. They also still ship to New York (via FFL), a service many retailers have abandoned. Case quantity pricing is competitive with SGAmmo and PSA. Same-day shipping before 3 PM EST on 98% of orders. The biggest value is the convenience of free shipping on small orders.
Strengths
- AMMO+ membership: 8% off everything + free shipping on any order size ($95-99.99/yr)
- Members get 3-hour early access to new inventory before non-members
- 4.9/5.0 across 233,000+ customer reviews
- Ships to NY (via FFL) when many retailers have stopped
- Same-day shipping on orders before 3 PM EST
Watch For
Non-member pricing is often higher than competitors. The membership only makes financial sense if you order 4+ times per year. Some Sitejabber reviews report frustration with out-of-stock items and membership ROI during low-availability periods. Case pricing (with free shipping already included) can match or beat member pricing at SGAmmo.
Brownells
brownells.com · Montezuma, IA · Founded 1939

Why #5: Brownells is an 85-year institution for a reason. Their ammo selection is one of the deepest in the industry, with hard-to-find calibers and specialty match loads that smaller retailers don't carry. Their Edge membership ($49.99/year) includes free shipping on everything, including heavy ammo orders, and stacks with frequent coupon codes for additional savings. Customer service includes actual gunsmiths who can recommend optimal ammunition for specific firearms and applications.
Pricing isn't the lowest at baseline, but when you combine Edge membership free shipping with their frequent 10-15% coupon codes, the total delivered cost becomes very competitive. The "Brownells Bucks" loyalty program converts 3% of purchases into future credits. BBB accredited, though recent complaint volume around shipping and returns is worth monitoring.
Strengths
- 100,000+ SKUs including specialty and hard-to-find ammunition
- Edge membership ($49.99/yr) with free shipping on everything
- Frequent coupon codes (10-15% off) stack with membership
- Technical support from actual gunsmiths and ammunition specialists
- 3% Brownells Bucks loyalty credit on all purchases
Watch For
Base pricing is premium tier. The value comes from stacking Edge membership + coupons + Brownells Bucks. Some recent BBB complaints about shipping delays and return processing.
MidwayUSA
midwayusa.com · Columbia, MO · Founded 1977

Why #6: MidwayUSA's customer service reputation is among the best in the firearms industry. Larry Potterfield built this company on the idea that knowledgeable service matters, and that culture persists. Their team can provide genuine technical guidance on ammunition selection, not just order support. The MidwayUSA Foundation's support of youth shooting programs earns real community goodwill.
Central Missouri location provides excellent shipping to both coasts. Over 100,000 products covering ammunition, reloading components, and every shooting accessory imaginable. Pricing is competitive but rarely the lowest. The value here is the combination of selection, service, and reliability. Bizrate shows 92% positive satisfaction rating.
Natchez Shooters Supplies
natchezss.com · Chattanooga, TN · Family-Owned Since 1977

Why #7: Natchez flies under the radar, but their flash sale pricing on premium brands (Federal, CCI, Speer) regularly beats SGAmmo, PSA, and Lucky Gunner. The catch: deals are sporadic and sell out fast. You need to be on their email list and ready to buy when the notification hits. Regular pricing is average. Sale pricing is exceptional. Most orders ship within 24 hours.
Family-owned since 1977 with a small-business agility that lets them adjust pricing and fulfill special orders faster than corporate competitors. Sales staff have authority to authorize special pricing for repeat customers. Personal service you won't get from a PSA or Brownells.
Ammunition Depot
ammunitiondepot.com · Jacksonville, FL

Veteran-founded with A+ BBB rating. Strong all-around performer with competitive pricing and reliable shipping. Formerly offered free shipping on all orders (a huge differentiator), but discontinued that policy, generating significant community backlash. Current free shipping threshold is $149+. Still a solid option with genuine expertise in surplus authentication and commercial ammunition.
Cabela's / Bass Pro Shops

The largest outdoor retailer in the US. The real advantage here is in-store pickup, which eliminates shipping costs and hazmat fees entirely. Seasonal clearance events after hunting season closures offer substantial discounts on hunting ammunition. Club membership provides additional savings. Buyers who are active outdoorsmen ensure inventory planning aligns with real hunting seasons. Their waterfowl ammunition selection is consistently among the best in the industry.
AmmoSeek
ammoseek.com · Price Comparison Engine

Not a retailer. AmmoSeek is the Google of ammunition shopping. It aggregates real-time pricing from hundreds of retailers, lets you filter by caliber, bullet weight, brand, and case type, then sort by cost per round including shipping. If you're not using AmmoSeek before every ammo purchase, you're overpaying. Price alerts notify you when your preferred ammo drops below your target price. Sort by "price per round including shipping" for true cost comparisons. Essential tool for every shooter.
Solid OptionsRetailers 11-20: Solid Options Worth Your Attention
Sportsman's Guide

Buyer's Club membership provides solid value for hunters who buy gear and ammo together. Hunting-focused selection with seasonal pricing aligned to real field conditions. The membership often pays for itself within 2-3 orders. Good bundling deals combining ammo with hunting gear.
Outdoor Limited

Curated inventory with staff who provide genuine application-specific guidance. Not the cheapest, but the personal service and expertise make up for it. Good option for shooters who want advice, not just a checkout button.
BulkAmmo.com

Dedicated bulk specialist with tiered pricing that rewards bigger purchases. Price breaks continue beyond advertised thresholds for very large orders. Good option for training facilities, ranges, and shooters buying 2,000+ rounds at a time. Mixed case orders can qualify for bulk pricing when total quantity reaches thresholds.
Bereli
bereli.com · Florida

Bereli offers genuinely low pricing with no-minimum free shipping, which is rare in the industry. However, we've moved them down significantly from our previous ranking. Bereli holds an F rating from the Better Business Bureau due to a high volume of unresolved complaints. Forum reports frequently cite slow shipping, poor communication, and difficult customer service interactions. The low prices are real, but the service experience is inconsistent. If you order from Bereli, be prepared for potential delays and limited support if something goes wrong.
Transparency Note
We previously ranked Bereli #2 in the 2025 version of this guide. That ranking was not supported by the BBB data or community feedback we've since reviewed. We're correcting that here.
Widener's Reloading
wideners.com · Johnson City, TN

The go-to for precision shooters and reloaders since 1978. Deep expertise in ballistics, components, and load development. Not the cheapest, but the quality focus and technical support justify the premium for shooters who care about accuracy over cost per round.
Cheaper Than Dirt
cheaperthandirt.com · Fort Worth, TX

Large inventory and sourcing ability, but carries significant reputation baggage from aggressive price gouging during the 2020-2022 shortage period. Many in the shooting community still boycott them for charging $1+/round for 9mm during the panic. If you can look past the history, their current pricing and selection are adequate. Regular clearance events can offer decent deals.
Rogers Sporting Goods

A Hunt Bums favorite for waterfowl ammunition and hunting gear. Team of actual outdoorsmen ensuring product recommendations are grounded in practical field experience. Strong seasonal selection of steel shot, bismuth, and premium waterfowl loads. Good option for hunters who want expertise alongside their purchase.
Ammo.com

Competitive pricing with 1% of every sale donated to pro-freedom organizations. Comprehensive educational resources including detailed caliber guides and historical context. Detailed product listings with ballistic data, specifications, and usage recommendations. Good educational resource for shooters who want to understand what they're buying. Competitive pricing with regular promotions.

StrategySmart Buying Strategies for 2026
Use AmmoSeek before every purchase. Spend 60 seconds checking AmmoSeek before you buy anything. Sort by cost per round including shipping. You'll catch deals you'd otherwise miss and avoid overpaying at familiar retailers.
Buy seasonal ammo in the off-season. Stock up on waterfowl loads in February, not September. Buy hunting rifle ammo in January. The price difference between off-season and peak-season can be 20-30% on the same product.
Hit free shipping thresholds. Shipping adds $0.01-0.03/round on typical orders. That erases the price advantage of a "cheap" retailer. PSA free ships over $49-99. SGAmmo free ships over $200. Brownells Edge members ship free on everything. Plan your orders to clear these thresholds.
Don't chase the absolute lowest price at the expense of reliability. A retailer advertising $0.02/rd cheaper than Lucky Gunner doesn't save you anything if your order takes 2 weeks to ship, arrives damaged, and customer service doesn't respond. Factor in the total experience, not just the price tag.
Sign up for email alerts from 3-4 retailers. Our recommended setup: PSA (daily deals), Natchez (flash sales), SGAmmo (bulk restocks), and your preferred membership retailer (TSUSA or Brownells). This covers every angle without drowning your inbox.
The best time to buy ammo was yesterday. The second best time is during a Natchez flash sale at 6 AM on a Tuesday in February.
Bottom LineWhere to Buy Ammo in 2026
Thirty retailers is a lot of tabs to open, so here's how it shakes out. If you want your order to actually ship when the site says it will, start with Lucky Gunner. If you're buying by the case and chasing the lowest cost per round, price it at SGAmmo first. If you order four or more times a year, Target Sports USA's AMMO+ membership pays for itself. And no matter where you buy, run the order through AmmoSeek before checkout.
Quick AnswersFrequently Asked Questions
In 44 states, yes. Six states (California, New York, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey) require background checks, permits, or FFL transfers for ammunition. Washington, D.C. prohibits online ammo sales entirely. Check your state's specific requirements before ordering.
You can order online, but it cannot ship to your home. All online ammunition orders must be shipped to a licensed California ammunition vendor or FFL holder. You then pick it up in person after passing a background check ($5 standard or $19 basic). California also charges an additional 11% excise tax on all ammunition as of July 2024.
Ground transportation only via UPS or FedEx. USPS prohibits ammunition shipping entirely. Air shipping is not permitted for ammunition. This means delivery typically takes 3-7 business days depending on distance. Alaska and Hawaii face additional limitations (sea freight only to AK).
For brass-cased FMJ range ammo: under $0.24/round is a good deal, under $0.20 is excellent. Steel-case can be found cheaper. Premium self-defense hollow points run $0.60-1.00+ per round depending on brand.
Online is almost always cheaper, typically 15-30% less per round than local retail even after shipping. The exception is when a local store runs a clearance or loss-leader deal. For bulk purchases (500+ rounds), online wins every time. The key is factoring in shipping costs to calculate true cost per round.
Properly stored factory ammunition (cool, dry conditions) typically maintains reliability for 10-20+ years. Military surplus has been fired reliably after 50+ years. The enemies of ammunition are moisture, extreme heat, and temperature cycling. A climate-controlled closet or safe is ideal.
