California Duck Season 2026-2027
Every date, zone, limit, and stamp for 2026-27, straight from CDFW. No fluff. Screenshot it and show up ready.
Updated for 2026-27 · Verified against CDFW
I've hunted the Sacramento Valley rice country for twenty-plus seasons, and every October I watch somebody lose a morning over a missed stamp or a misread zone date. So here's the whole 2026-27 season in one place, every number pulled straight from CDFW and the Fish and Game Commission. If it's in this post, it's in the regs. One caveat: rules can change and daily shoot-time tables post closer to the opener, so give CDFW a final look before you hunt.
What Is NewWhat Changed for 2026-27
Hunted last year? Four updates worth knowing. The valley and southern zones now run through January 31, the final Sunday, right when the birds pile up. The white-fronted (speck) limit dropped to 6 a day in the Northeastern, Balance of State, and Southern San Joaquin Valley zones. The Northeast large Canada limit went up to 3. And pintail held at 3 a day, any sex, under the federal harvest strategy.
Hunt Bums Tip
Falconers get three bonus days, February 20 to 22, in the Balance of State, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California zones. For the rest of us, the gun closes January 31.
GeographyFind Your Zone First
California has five waterfowl zones, and yours decides your dates and goose limits. Getting this wrong is the most common rookie mistake there is.
Find Your Zone Fast
Sacramento Valley rice, the Delta, the Butte Sink, Colusa, Willows, Gridley, Yuba City: Balance of State. Klamath Basin and the far northeast corner: Northeastern. Los Banos, Mendota, and the southern Central Valley: Southern San Joaquin Valley. The Imperial and San Jacinto areas and the southern coast: Southern California. The river strip by Blythe and Needles: Colorado River. Still not sure? The official CDFW zone map settles it in two minutes.
The Calendar2026-27 Season Dates by Zone
The short answer: most of California opens Saturday, October 24, the Northeast opens Saturday, October 3, and the Colorado River strip opens Friday, October 23. Full table below. Scaup runs a shorter window inside the duck season.
| Zone | Ducks | Scaup | Geese (Regular) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeastern | Oct 3 - Jan 13 | Oct 3 - Nov 29 & Dec 17 - Jan 13 | Canada Oct 3 - Jan 10; white & specks Oct 3 - Nov 29 & Jan 1 - Jan 13 |
| Balance of State | Oct 24 - Jan 31 | Nov 7 - Jan 31 | Oct 24 - Jan 31 (early large Canada Oct 3 - 5) |
| S. San Joaquin Valley | Oct 24 - Jan 31 | Nov 7 - Jan 31 | Oct 24 - Jan 31 |
| Southern California | Oct 24 - Jan 31 | Nov 7 - Jan 31 | Oct 24 - Jan 31 |
| Colorado River | Oct 23 - Jan 31 | Nov 7 - Jan 31 | Oct 23 - Jan 31 |
A few extras the table can't hold: the Northeast gets a late white and speck goose season February 5 through March 10, the Balance of State gets an early large Canada hunt October 3 to 5 plus late goose days in February (Canada February 20 to 21, white-fronts and whites February 20 to 24), and coots and moorhens run statewide alongside the ducks. The Balance of State season is a full 100 days.
The MathBag and Possession Limits
The duck limit is 7 a day, any mix, but some species carry their own cap inside that seven. Possession is triple the bag, so 21 ducks.
| Species | Daily Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Total Ducks | 7 | Any combination of legal species, within the caps below |
| Mallard | 7 | No more than 2 hens (in the Colorado River Zone, the 2-bird cap covers hen mallards and Mexican ducks combined) |
| Pintail | 3 | Any sex |
| Canvasback | 2 | |
| Redhead | 2 | |
| Scaup | 2 | Only while the scaup season is open in your zone |
How the Caps Work
Legal strap: 4 gadwall + 3 pintail = 7. Done for the day. Illegal strap: 5 mallards where 3 are hens. You're only at 5 birds, but you're over the 2-hen cap, and that's a ticket. The caps bite even when your total's under 7.
Geese vary by zone, and the dark-goose numbers are where this year's changes landed. Possession is triple the bag across the board. Coots and moorhens: 25 a day, 75 in possession, statewide.
| Zone | Daily Geese | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Northeastern | 30 | 20 white, 10 dark, but no more than 6 white-fronted or 3 large Canada |
| Balance of State | 30 | 20 white, 10 dark, no more than 6 white-fronted (only 3 in the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area) |
| S. San Joaquin Valley | 30 | 20 white, 10 dark, no more than 6 white-fronted |
| Southern California | 23 | 20 white, 3 dark |
| Colorado River | 24 | 20 white, 4 dark |
Hunt specks north of the Sutter Buttes? Inside the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area it's only 3 white-fronts a day, not 6. Burn that one in.
Special DaysYouth, Veteran & Military Days
Extra days outside the regular season, same bag limits, way less pressure. If you've got a kid who's into it, youth days are the best on-ramp in the sport.
| Zone | Youth Days | Veteran & Military Days |
|---|---|---|
| Northeastern | Sept 19 - 20 | Jan 17 - 18 (ducks only) |
| Balance of State | Feb 13 - 14 | Feb 6 - 7 (ducks only) |
| S. San Joaquin Valley | Feb 13 - 14 | Feb 6 - 7 |
| Southern California | Feb 13 - 14 | Feb 6 - 7 |
| Colorado River | Feb 13 - 14 | Not listed |
PaperworkLicenses, Stamps & Fees
You need four things to hunt ducks legally, and missing any one makes the other three worthless: a California hunting license (runs July 1 to June 30, so buying now covers the whole season; first-timers need hunter ed), a California Duck Validation (juniors exempt), a federal Duck Stamp if you're 16 or older ($25, signed across the face in ink; 98 cents of every dollar buys wetland habitat), and a free HIP validation, a quick survey printed onto your license. People get cited for skipping HIP, so don't.
| Item | Fee | Who Needs It |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Hunting License | $62.90 | Residents 16+ |
| Nonresident Hunting License | $219.81 | Nonresidents 16+ |
| Junior Hunting License | $16.46 | Hunters under 16 |
| California Duck Validation | $39.96 | All waterfowlers (juniors exempt) |
| Federal Duck Stamp | $25.00 | Waterfowlers 16 and up |
| HIP Validation | Free | All migratory bird hunters |
For a resident, the core stack runs about $128. State fees tick up a little every July 1, so confirm exact totals at checkout; the federal stamp is locked at $25 by law.
The RulesShooting Hours, Shot & Methods
Shooting hours: one-half hour before sunrise to sunset statewide, except Morro Bay, which starts at 7:00 a.m. CDFW posts exact daily shoot-time tables, and many refuges close earlier in the afternoon, so check your spot. Nontoxic shot only: lead's illegal for all hunting in California, period, since 2019. Run steel, bismuth, or tungsten, and don't even carry a stray lead shell in your blind bag. Plug your gun to 3 shells (two in the mag, one in the chamber, one-piece plug), nothing bigger than 10 gauge. And the federal rules that trip people up: no shooting from a moving boat under power, no electronic calls, no hunting over bait (an area stays off-limits 10 days after bait's removed), one bag limit per day, and the head or one feathered wing stays on your birds until you're home.
Where to HuntPublic Land, Passes & Refuges
State wildlife areas come in three tiers. Type A areas are the managed, check-station spots and need a Type A pass. Type B areas need a Type B pass. Type C ground needs no pass at all, just your license and validations. Juniors skip the pass requirement entirely.
| Pass | Fee | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Type A One-Day | $28.34 | One day at a Type A area, space permitting |
| Type A Two-Day | $45.62 | Two shoot days, or two hunters one day |
| Type A Season | $213.84 | Unlimited Type A and Type B access all season |
| Type B Season | $71.85 | Unlimited Type B access all season |
| Reservation Application | $1.34 | Per hunt choice in the draw |
The reservation draw opens September 1 through the CDFW online system or any license agent, closes 17 days before each hunt, and posts results at least seven days out. My advice: put in for season-long reservations the day it opens.
The Sacramento NWR Complex (Sacramento, Delevan, Colusa, and Sutter) is my home water and some of the best public duck ground in the country. These refuges hunt Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays only, and entry runs in three tiers: reservation holders first, then an evening-before lottery at the check station (cards in between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., draw at 8:00), then first-come spaces. Check stations open at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and Friday nights. Present your reservation no later than 1.5 hours before shoot time at Sacramento and Delevan, or 1 hour before at Colusa and Sutter, or you lose your spot.
Refuge Rules That Bite
Type A pass required. Max 25 shot shells in the field. Gun stays unloaded until your assigned blind or the free-roam area. Out no later than 1.5 hours after sunset. Hunters 15 and under stay with an adult 18+. Shotguns only, no rifles or pistols, and nothing bigger than 12 gauge here (tighter than the statewide 10-gauge rule). Nontoxic shot no larger than BB, or T in steel.
One thing that trips up new hunters: the Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday schedule only applies to refuges and most Type A areas. On private land and at duck clubs, you can hunt any day the season's open.
Bottom LineYour Pre-Season Checklist
Five moves and you're ready: 1. Find your zone on the CDFW map. 2. Buy your license and California Duck Validation. 3. Get your $25 federal Duck Stamp and free HIP validation. 4. Plug your gun to 3 shells and stock nontoxic shot. 5. Hunting public land? Put in for the draw September 1.
Everything here comes straight from CDFW and the Fish and Game Commission as of publish day, but regs get amended and refuges carry their own fine print, so give the official CDFW waterfowl page one last look before you hunt. Then shoot straight, pick up your cripples, and leave the marsh better than you found it.
Quick AnswersCalifornia Duck Season FAQ
Depends on your zone. The Northeastern Zone opens Saturday, October 3, 2026. The Colorado River Zone opens Friday, October 23. The Balance of State, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California zones all open Saturday, October 24, 2026.
The Balance of State, Southern San Joaquin Valley, Southern California, and Colorado River zones all close Sunday, January 31, 2027. The Northeastern Zone closes earlier, on January 13, 2027.
Seven ducks a day. That can include up to 7 mallards (no more than 2 hens), 3 pintail, 2 canvasback, 2 redhead, and 2 scaup. Possession is triple the daily bag, so 21 ducks.
Three pintail a day, any sex. The 3-pintail limit carries over for 2026-27 under the federal interim harvest strategy, up from the old 1-bird limit.
Scaup runs a shorter window than the rest of the ducks. In most zones it's open November 7 through January 31. In the Northeastern Zone it's split: October 3 to November 29, then December 17 to January 13. The limit's 2 a day when it's open.
Four things: a California hunting license (about $63 for residents), a California Duck Validation (about $40), a federal Duck Stamp ($25, age 16 and up, signed in ink), and a free HIP validation. The core stack runs a resident about $128. Public-land passes are extra.
No. Lead shot's illegal for all waterfowl hunting. You have to use approved nontoxic shot like steel, bismuth, or tungsten. California also bans lead for all hunting statewide, a rule in place since 2019.
One-half hour before sunrise to sunset across the state. The only exception is Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County, where it starts at 7:00 a.m. A lot of federal refuges close earlier in the afternoon, so check the area you're hunting.
On private land and at duck clubs, you can hunt any day the season's open, within legal shooting hours. On the national wildlife refuges and most managed Type A wildlife areas, hunting's limited to Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Yes. Junior hunters get their own youth days: September 19 to 20 in the Northeastern Zone and February 13 to 14 in the other four zones. Regular-season bag limits apply, and the crowds are usually lighter.

This guide is for general information and planning. Every date, limit, fee, and rule was checked against official California Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and California Fish and Game Commission sources on the publish date above. Regulations can change, so always confirm the current rules with CDFW before you hunt. Hunt Bums isn't a government agency and doesn't issue licenses or permits.
